16.2 2V2 Pair Competition

We hosted a 2v2 competition in December 2020 where pairs of group members had to develop their own AI for a team consisting of 2 agents. The participants included in order of seeding, the seedings were taken from the previous tournament :

  • Assembled Dead AI
  • Public School Heroes
  • Andries Old FC

A good improvement from last time was seen from all the contestants, whereby each team demonstrated a more complex and robust strategy incorporating both dribbling and passing into their approaches.

The final results can be seen below, with the victor being Public School Heroes.

In conclusion the participating members agreed that we had reached our limitation with this 2v2 tournament as there was not much more room for improvement with regards to strategy. The limitation of only having two players means that if you are more defensive, you cant really counterattack with any meaningful passes. At least not in anyway that would be better that than just dribbling. Alternatively if you were more aggressive with position, you would often times leave yourselves open if possession was lost.

Things that would improve performance would more general improvements that would improve things regardless of the format. These include :

  • More stable walk
  • Faster walk
  • Longer Kick
  • More consistent normal kicks

The event was unable to be recorded and streamed at the same time due to the visualiser lagging. However, it was re-simulated afterwards with the same result albeit different scores. This is why there is a difference between the official tournament results and the footage. Latter it was determined that the excessive amounts of drawings were to blame along with the strain Discord streaming has.
